The town of Witten lies in the South of the Ruhr Area directly on the River Ruhr and is regarded as the birthplace of mining in the Ruhr Area. A fascinating industrial heritage, and yet also a variety of nature, is offered by the beautiful little town in the Ennepe-Ruhr district and is therefore a popular destination for weekend trips or for a short break.

In the Muttental valley near Witten nearly 200 years ago the first proper colliery of the region was developed. The Nachtigall colliery nowadays recounts this fascinating industrial history and leads visitors amongst other features through a 130-metre long visitor gallery. As a key attraction on the Route of Industrial Heritage the Nachtigall colliery is one of the major places of interest in the Ruhr Area. On a lovely circular walk visitors can even see a genuine coal seam. A museum and the Muttental railway complete the range of tourist attractions.

The River Ruhr, which flows through Witten, is regarded as a true water sports paradise and wonderful canoe tours are possible among a variety of other activities. Rowers and fishers can also enjoy their sport on the River Ruhr.

The 230-kilometre Ruhr Valley Cycle Route also passes Witten on its way from Winterberg to Duisburg. A spectacular trip through the beautiful Ruhr valley can, for example, begin with the excursion vessel MS Schwalbe on the Ruhr taking you to Lake Kemnade and be continued with a boat trip around the lake on the MS Kemnade.

The Ruhr Valley Railway, whose historic railcar operates between Hagen and Bochum-Dahlhausen at the weekend, also stops at several stations in Witten and can be combined well with bike or boat trips.
