City of Bochum
The City of Bochum is the centre of the Discovery Area Festspielplatz RUHR (RUHR Festival Square). Lovingly serenaded by the famous German pop musician Herbert Grönemeyer, Bochum symbolises the true Ruhr Area. Many of the landmarks are simply essential components of any city break in the Ruhr Area.
The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum (Bochum's Century Hall) is almost unique in its combination of industrial monument with high-class culture – the very finest industrial heritage! Theatre productions, above all the Ruhrtriennale of course, are transformed by the old industrial hall into unique events.
Musical fans will be thrilled by STARLIGHT EXPRESS, the most successful musical in the Ruhr Area.
The German Museum of Mining in Bochum explains the history of mining, and uses a replica mine to impressively demonstrate how underground work in the pits once looked, and how it looks today. The museum is also a hub of the Route of Industrial Heritage.
For families, it is well worth visiting the Knirps colliery, located directly at what was once the Hannover colliery. There, children can understand through play what is involved in colliery work. An excursion to the Railway Museum at Bochum-Dahlhausen is also recommended for families.
The best place to end a pleasant day out in the Ruhr Area is the Bermuda3Eck, the nightlife district in the Ruhr Area. Here you can stroll from bar to bar and enjoy the wide range of cocktails.
