The Zollverein World Heritage Site is now the best known industrial monument
in the Ruhr Area, and is the centre point of its creativity-based economy.
The Ruhr Area is developing into a cycling metropolis. To be precise, into the Ruhr Cycling Region! The region is already growing quickly today with a cycle path network over 1.200 kilometres in length. Excellently developed former railway trails and attractively landscaped canal bank paths ensure safe and undisturbed cycling fun, away from road traffic, granting many an exciting view into the backyards and gardens of the Ruhr Metropolis.
A close-knit network of excellently developed cycle paths leads visitors on a direct path to the highlights of the Ruhr Metropolis. Here it is above all the imposing contemporary witnesses of our industrial heritage that ensure astonishment and unforgettable holiday moments. Cycle-friendly hosts are the starting points for eventful multi-day cycling tours, or exciting day trips in the region. Charming beer gardens and our unique refreshment kiosks ensure relaxing breaks. Visitors that travel to the Ruhr Metropolis without their own bicycles will find a dense network of bicycle rental stations at central rail stations and important tourist attractions. Starting in 2018, a newly designed hub system and a digital cycling tour planner will make orientation even easier.
The equally charming and multifaceted “>> RuhrtalRadweg (Ruhr Valley Cycle Route)” and the new “>> Römer-Lippe-Route (Roman Lippe route)” extend the industrial heritage tour to Winterberg in the Sauerland and Detmold in East-Westphalia. These routes also establish a connection to the national network of high-class long-distance cycle routes.
Attractive connections between the individual discovery routes allow you to compile individual tours as you please. In this way, you can choose between a variety of exciting day excursions, multi-day legs or radial tours with your bicycle. For all those who want to get to know the Ruhr Metropolis actively and who love the variety between exciting cultural experiences and romantic nature, there is just one way to go: go cycling!
