target point LWL Industrial Museum Henrichshütte Hattingen
One of the most strenuous routes in the radrevier.ruhr: 57 kilometers
The total length is 460 metres in altitude. From the Ruhr valley
The circuit leads up towards the Bergisches Land. The beautiful, gently curved
Landscape is therefore the central experience on this tour.
The starting location
The Henrichshütte in Hattingen is an anchor point on the Industrial Heritage Route and a good starting point for this tour. There are plenty of parking spaces here. Those arriving by train can also join the tour from Hattingen / Ruhr station.
 start of the tour
From the impressive Henrichshütte, the route initially leads directly to the Ruhr. Cyclists can enjoy the beautiful nature right by the river along the south bank. At junction 26, the route branches off from the Ruhr Valley Cycle Path and leads along city streets to the entrance of the former coal railway, today known primarily as the Glück-Auf-Trasse.
Always slightly uphill – the Glück-Auf-Trasse
At first you hardly notice it, but the railway line runs continuously uphill. Without any traffic, your view can always wander over the fields and forests of the hilly landscape. If you haven't had enough of the Bergisches Land at junction 7, you can quickly get from here through the Schee tunnel to the popular Nordbahntrasse in Wuppertal. This route branches off here, however, and now heads towards Wetter.
Rural idyll on the edge of the Bergisches Land
If you pay close attention, you will also find relics of industrial culture here. Most of them date back to the early beginnings of mining in the Ruhr, which began here in the south and then spread further and further north over the centuries. But what is most impressive is the rural idyll that can be seen everywhere along the road and represents an exciting contrast to the central Ruhr area.
The Elbschetal Railway
After a little road traffic, the route of the former Elbschetal railway takes the cyclists back to the Ruhr valley. The historic town center of Wengern is worth seeing, with some beautiful half-timbered houses and nice cafes and restaurants. The small Henriette Davidis Museum commemorates the teacher whose "Practical Cookbook" became a standard work in German kitchens.
Back via the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route
From Wetter-Wengern, the route now leads back to Hattingen via the popular Ruhr Valley Cycle Path. For cyclists, the Nachtigall mine, the Hardenstein ferry with its neighboring castle ruins and the Kemnader Lake are particularly worthwhile stops to give your body a short break from the saddle.
 The Henrichshütte Hattingen
Of course, every cyclist should also allow enough time for the Henrichshütte. In the exhibition halls, visitors can learn a lot about the steel industry on the Ruhr. The absolute highlight for visitors is the oldest surviving blast furnace on the Ruhr, which is even wheelchair accessible via an elevator.
