The Urban.Trail Hagen is an urban discovery tour that perfectly blends art, culture, history, and nature. The trail starts at the main train station and leads you along Bahnhofstraße and Neumarktstraße to the Hagen Theatre, where culture and tradition meet. Along Humboldtstraße, you'll encounter an impressive mural by Martin Bender before reaching Hagen City Park – a green oasis in the heart of the city – by passing an old bunker and through a colorful underpass.

From here, the path climbs uphill through allotment gardens to the Bismarck Tower and continues along forest paths to the Eugen Richter Tower, where you can climb the tower on weekends and enjoy spectacular views of Hagen and the Ruhr Valley. Afterwards, the path leads downhill past the abandoned Klutert sports field directly into the creative district of Wehringhausen.

Here you'll experience Hagen's urban soul: the WirrWarr creative quarter, exciting street art spots on Moltkestraße featuring more works by Martin Bender, cozy cafés like Café & Bistro gegenüber, Zum Buntspecht, or the Eisbar, as well as concept stores like Onkel Jo sein Laden. The route then leads back to the main train station via Bismarckstraße and Augustastraße – a circular walk full of street vibes, panoramic views, and creative discoveries amidst big-city flair and green spaces.

You can easily reach Hagen by car via several motorways:

  • From Dortmund or Wuppertal via the A1 (Hagen-West or Hagen-Nord exit),
  • from the direction of Essen or Iserlohn via the A46,
  • from the direction of Bochum or Lüdenscheid via the A45 (Sauerland line).

From each exit, the main train station can be reached within a few minutes by following the signs towards "Zentrum".

Several parking options are available in the immediate vicinity, such as the parking lots at the main train station, the Volme-Galerie parking garage, or the central parking garage. All are within easy walking distance.

Hagen Central Station is excellently connected to public transport. There are ICE and IC connections from Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin, and Hamburg. In addition, the regional express lines RE4, RE7, RE13, RE17, and RE57, as well as the S-Bahn lines S8 and S9, operate from the station. Bus lines from all parts of the city stop directly in front of the station.

The trail starts at Hagen Central Station, directly in the plaza in front of the main entrance. From here, you walk along Bahnhofstraße and then along Neumarktstraße to Theaterplatz. The historic Theater Hagen, rebuilt in 1949, represents the city's cultural diversity – from opera and ballet to drama and youth theater.

Next, follow Humboldtstrasse, where you'll be greeted by a large mural by Hagen street artist Martin Bender – a powerful example of the city's vibrant urban art scene. Continue past Bunker Hagen, a relic from the post-war period, whose walls are now being enlivened with new artistic works. A colorful graffiti-covered underpass leads you past the Buschey Cemetery, and you'll reach Hagen City Park – one of the city's oldest green spaces.

You'll gradually ascend through quiet park paths, past gardens and allotments, until you reach the Bismarck Tower. From here, you'll have a panoramic view of Hagen and the Ruhr Valley. On weekends, depending on opening times, it's possible to climb the tower.

The trail then leads you along pleasant forest paths through the heights of Hagen to the Eugen-Richter-Tower, another viewpoint in the city. A short climb here is worthwhile to enjoy the panorama. Afterwards, the trail descends to the Klutert Sports Ground, a former sports venue that now stands silently and mysteriously, a reminder of bygone days.

The route now leads you to the creative district of Wehringhausen, where art and culture are closely intertwined. In the WirrWarr creative quarter, you'll discover a mix of studios, workshops, and galleries – a vibrant hub of ideas. Along Lange Straße, numerous cafés, bistros, and restaurants invite you to linger, including... To the great spotted woodpeckerthe Café & Bistro Opposite or a EisbarShopping enthusiasts also enjoy concept stores like... Uncle Jo's shop on your costs.

A special highlight awaits you on Moltkestraße: In the courtyard, you'll find an impressive street art gallery featuring murals by Martin Bender and other artists. Here, creative energy and urban freedom come together in the most beautiful way.

Finally, the route passes WirrWarr – Center for Creativity, then continues along Mauerstraße, Bismarckstraße, Sternstraße and Augustastraße back towards Hagen main station, where the trail ends.

Pay attention to traffic at street crossings. Some sections are not suitable for strollers due to stairs. Please keep dogs on a leash.

Comfortable, weatherproof shoes are recommended. In summer, sunscreen, a water bottle, and a camera or smartphone for capturing street art along the route are worthwhile.

Take some time for a stop at the Bismarck Tower or the Eugen Richter Tower – both viewpoints offer spectacular views over Hagen and the Ruhr Valley. If you're looking for urban inspiration, be sure to visit the street art courtyard on Moltkestraße – a true open-air studio for local artists and the perfect subject for your next hike-seeing photo.
