The collection encompasses works from the Romantic era to the present day, making the museum a must-see for art lovers.

Next, head to Rüttenscheider Straße, Essen's vibrant street for restaurants, shops, and nightlife. Here, cafés, restaurants, concept stores, and boutiques line the street – pure urban living. Take some time to stroll and explore before moving on.

After the trendy district, you'll reach Grugapark Essen, the city's green heart spanning 65 hectares. This expansive park invites you to relax and unwind – with well-maintained gardens, ponds, playgrounds, and secluded quiet zones. If you're planning a few extra kilometers on your trail, this is the perfect place to explore the park.

From the park, the path leads you past the Ronald McDonald House in Essen and the Hundertwasser House in Grugapark to Margarethenhöhe, Germany's first garden city. The impressive architecture of this green former mining settlement and its unique atmosphere make this district a truly special place.

The trail continues through the countryside, past the historic Halbachhammer, a former hammer mill dating back to the 16th century, now preserved as an industrial monument. The path leads you through wooded sections and along small streams – a particularly idyllic part of the tour.

Passing through Essen-Bredeny, you'll eventually reach Villa Hügel, the former residence of the Krupp industrial family. This castle-like estate sits majestically above Lake Baldeney and tells tales of power, wealth, and industrial prosperity. It's well worth a visit at the end of your tour. If you like, you can explore the interior or simply stroll through the expansive park.

Passing the park, the trail leads you down to Lake Baldeney, the largest reservoir on the Ruhr River and a popular recreational area for the residents of Essen. Here you can stroll along the shore, watch the sailboats, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. Several cafes and restaurants on the lakeshore invite you to take a break with a view of the water.

From here it's just a few minutes to the Essen-Hügel S-Bahn station (Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße, 45133 Essen), where your tour ends. From here you can easily take the S-Bahn back to the main train station or to other destinations in the Ruhr area.

The Urban.Trail runs mostly along paved paths through parks and urban neighborhoods. Be aware of traffic at intersections, especially in the city center. Some sections may not be suitable for strollers due to stairs. Dogs must be kept on a leash.
