More than 5 million people live in the Ruhr area. Of course, the
Agriculture plays an important role in supplying the inhabitants. Even in
In the heart of the Ruhr metropolis there are unexpectedly large fields and pastures.
But it is precisely in the areas surrounding the big cities that the landscape opens up and vast agricultural areas come to light. The “Landpartie” regional route runs for 52 kilometers through a particularly important, agricultural region in the northern Ruhr area.
The starting location
The train station in Dorsten is a particularly good place to start this regional route. The station is easily accessible by regional trains. If you are travelling by car, there are suitable parking spaces in the area around the town.
start of the tour
From the junction at the train station in Dorsten, the tour leads south through a little city traffic. From junction 66, the tour leads into the Kirchheller Heide, which is initially characterized by wide fields with many farms and riding stables.
Small, village-like settlements are repeatedly passed through, as well as wide fields.
mining romance in the middle of the fields
If you look closely, you will even discover important industrial culture for the Ruhr area here. Shaft 10 of the Prosper Haniel mine, the last mine in the Ruhr area, still stands in the middle of the Kirchheller Heide. It was closed in December 2018. The miners drove in from here, while the coal was transported underground to the south of Bottrop and brought to the surface via a long conveyor belt near the tetrahedron.
The natural paradise Kirchheller Heide
In the middle of the Kirchheller Heide there is a small lake landscape that is now a real natural idyll. The larger lakes such as the Heidesee were created by gravel mining. Some smaller, almost mystical lakes such as the Elsbachsee, which is also known as the Pfingstsee, are still in the process of being created. The landscape is sinking due to subsidence caused by coal mining and lakes are suddenly appearing in places where there used to be forests or fields.
Agriculture in the northern Ruhr area
The tour continues northwest. You cycle through wide fields again. In Hünxe, a small town with nice cafes awaits the cyclists before continuing north over the Wesel-Datteln canal and the Lippe.
The historic Lippe barge village of Krudenburg is cycled through and offers numerous photo opportunities.
railway track cycling
In Drevenack, the tour comes across an old railway line that leads from Wesel to Dorsten. Although the route is not asphalted, it still offers cyclists a relaxed ride away from traffic. The former railway line is interrupted again and again, and the short detours offer views of beautiful country houses and old windmills.
Back in Dorsten
In the last few metres, the RevierRoute leads over the Lippe dike before crossing a bridge back to the southern side of the Lippe and the
Wesel-Datteln Canal. In the center of Dorsten, the Jewish Museum is particularly worth a visit.
