Kids, in particular, love zipping through the terrain and experiencing adventures big and small. Of course, the little pedal-riders don't necessarily need a gravel bike, but the gravel portion of this short adventure tour is quite high. With a playground, pump track, skate park, and plenty of off-road fun, families can have a wonderful time on this short tour.
This family tour starts at the Ewald Colliery in Herten. There are plenty of parking spaces for those arriving by car. First, the family will enjoy a leisurely ride through the colliery grounds before finally entering the beautiful Emscherbruch forest area. The first stop is quickly reached – Lake Ewald, just 2 kilometers away, offers a beautiful natural experience. Those who wish can cycle around the small lake or simply leave their bikes parked for a while and enjoy the forest.
The trail continues through the Emscherbruch (Emscher Marsh) around the large central landfill. The forest paths run away from traffic, with only occasional careful crossings of larger roads. A short stretch follows the Emscher River and passes blue horse sculptures. Those looking for refreshments will find a relaxed beer garden at Gut Steinhausen, located at a horse farm.
On the eastern side of the Hoppenbruch slag heap, the route leads over fine gravel towards the Hoheward slag heap. For older kids who find small hill climbs a challenge, both slag heaps are also easily climbable. But even the detour offers plenty of gravel fun. Three-quarters of the way along the route is the highlight for active families: the Active Linear Park. The newly designed park features a lovely playground for climbing and sliding, while a pump track helps kids hone their riding skills. Even parents can test their strength in the Calisthenics Park.
If you haven't had enough adventure yet, you can immerse yourself in the underground world of the training mine after prior registration. Toil like a miner, and the next mining adventure awaits around every corner. From here, the final few meters lead over the Dragon Bridge to the Balcony Promenade, where you can relax and enjoy a beautiful view of the central Ruhr area before returning to the starting point of the tour.
