After a long hiatus, the project has been continuously revised since 2015. In addition to the geological features – particularly those of the karst region – the aim was now to also convey regional, botanical, and historical information. At that time, initial considerations were made to designate the Kluterthöhle cave as a National Natural Monument after the completion of the ongoing renaturation measures. The goal of the new Geotope Route was therefore to extend the length of visitors' stay at the Kluterthöhle by introducing an attractive, new, and interesting element closely related to the actual show cave.
The karst hiking trail has been offered as a guided tour several times since 2015. These hikes were always fully booked, and the participants were consistently enthusiastic. As part of the VITAL.NRW funding project, the idea arose to develop a handbook. This sturdy paperback is intended to enable interested individuals to explore the treasures of the Ennepetal karst on their own.
Large sections of the route are likely unknown even to most locals, and at times you get the impression of being on a long trek somewhere in the Outback, even though you're never really far from the nearest settlement. The Ennepetal Karst Trail is not for casual hikers, nor is it suitable for wheelchair users or families with strollers. Sturdy footwear, appropriate hiking clothes, sure-footedness, and good physical condition are essential for this challenging, enjoyable, and exciting hike. After all, the 11,5-kilometer route involves climbing over 300 meters in altitude, spread across four "mountains." With various explanations along the way and a short break, you should allow about four to five hours.

The Ennepetal Karst Trail is not a single, paved or gravelled circular route; instead, it utilizes various paths and, in some cases, unpaved natural trails and tracks. There are no trail markers. Entering the trail is at your own risk and responsibility.
This booklet serves two purposes: firstly, it describes the entire route, and secondly, it addresses and discusses all the interesting aspects along the way. At the end, it provides references to further reading.
Please do not destroy anything, litter, mark anything, and behave quietly and respectfully in the remote areas, showing consideration for nature and the landowners. Additional shortcuts and unofficial paths disrupt the trails and damage the sometimes sensitive ecosystems. Keep your dogs on a leash at all times. Be friendly and courteous to others.
We urge you NOT to use a hammer and chisel to break off rocks in the geological outcrops. Future visitors will also want to enjoy and explore these geological features. Please respect fences and cave closures.
If everyone follows these rules, which are actually quite obvious, nothing will stand in the way of the sustainable and long-term exploration of our landscape in the long run.

Good luck on the Ennepetal Karst Trail!
