The special magic of the Rhine has captivated the
People. On its long journey from the Alps to the North Sea,
The mighty river also flows into the western Ruhr area. Wide floodplains and
Fields characterize the image of the Rhine here. This RevierRoute presents this important habitat for flora and fauna.
The starting location
Cyclists who want to travel by public transport should start at the train station in Wesel. However, the city traffic up to the RevierRoute is not ideal for cyclists. For car drivers, however, junction 61 is more suitable. South of Wesel on the western bank of the Rhine is the Hotel Wacht am Rhein, from here the actual circular route to the south can be easily started.
Always to the South
The tour first goes from the train station to the Rhine and over the bridge to the western bank. The tour then goes south on the dam. Many sights are not on the side of the road, but the nature and landscape take center stage.
The Borth Salt Mine is located in Borth, the last active mine on the Lower Rhine. Rock salt is mined here, but the facility is not open to tourists on normal days.
The town of Rheinberg is the first larger settlement. The TerraZoo is a possible detour from the main route before continuing along the Rhine through beautiful natural areas.
The medieval Orsoy
The first traces of settlement date back to 750 BC. Today, the medieval past is particularly present. A large city wall and a fortress-like complex in Orsoy create the medieval atmosphere. Orsoy was originally known for tobacco processing, but not much of that remains today. Nice cafes and restaurants ensure the right quality of stay before taking the Orsoy ferry across the Rhine to the eastern bank in Duisburg-Walsum.
Keeping an eye on the Father Rhine
The ferry marks the southern turning point of the RevierRoute. From now on, the tour leads north through the Walsumer Rheinaue nature reserve. After the mouth of the Emscher, the route briefly leaves the Rhine in the Voerde area. The district of Götterswickerhamm is a popular excursion destination right on the Rhine with some nice restaurants with a view of the river.
The renaturalized Lippe estuary delta
The tour continues north. A special natural attraction is the newly constructed cycle path through the renaturalized estuary of the Lippe. Shortly before the Lippe reaches the Rhine, it branches off into many small arms and many small islands are created that serve as habitats for animals and plants. Finally, the route leads back to the starting point of the tour in Wesel.
A particularly worthwhile attraction for visitors in Wesel is the Niederrhein Museum Wesel, which is housed in an impressive fortress.
