Founded by Milan-based Roberto Ciulli in 1980, with the idea of a new form of municipal theatre, the Theatre by the Ruhr in Mülheim moved into the unused Kursaal of the Solbad Raffelberg at the city limits of Duisburg a year later. There you can still experience acting, based on an innovative structure of cultural work. At the Theatre by the Ruhr you will find a place of encounter and dialogue which is open to everyone. The foyer is constantly changing: Whether as an exhibition or reception, meeting place for young and old or people from all over the world: everyone is welcome in Mülheim's municipal theatre!
Experience the world as a guest in the Theatre by the Ruhr
The theatre was primarily known through its multinational, open-minded cultural work. As a result, the ensemble performed at numerous festivals in Europe and South America, was the first West German theatre in 1985, went on tour in Yugoslavia and was invited to Iran as the first Western theatre in 2004. In turn, the many foreign contacts ensure that you can see many artists from all over the world on stage in Mülheim.
Up to date theatre work at the Theatre by the Ruhr:
The theatre work in Mülheim is characterised by the idea of constantly reorienting itself to the requirements of art. You will notice that a high level of personal continuity and flat hierarchies prevail in the Mülheim municipal theatre, because only then can optimal conditions arise for the artistic process, or such is the claim of the ensemble’s concept. Everything is geared toward flexible, unbureaucratic, collective and independent work, so that current topics can be picked up on in the quickest possible way.
