Broich Castle - visit the oldest castle from the late Carolingian period

A feeling of past times and centuries-old ruins. You can expect exactly that in the historic Broich Castle in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Located directly on the Ruhr, today the castle is the oldest preserved castle from the late Carolingian period in the German-speaking world. Today, you will find a museum, beer garden and restaurant here. A number of events also take place at Broich Castle over the year. Especially popular is the annual Broich Castle Christmas but jazz concerts, knights’ festivals and events, such as the medieval market are also absolutely worth a visit.

Transformation into today’s castle

The castle built more than 1,100 years ago for protection from the Normans became today’s Broich Castle over the course of the centuries. In the castle’s museum, there is an exhibition of the Mülheim History Association where you can marvel at a three-dimensional model of Mülheim from the time of Napoleon amongst other things. You can also get married in Broich Castle or rent the rooms for special occasions.
