You will find one of the most exciting museums deep underneath the ground in Unna: In the fermentation cellars of the former Lindenbrauerei brewery, the Centre for International Light Art exhibits fascinating installations which literally shine a completely new light on the historic atmosphere. The permanent exhibition presents approximately 13 multi-faceted works by famous artists. Their installations have been adapted to thee respective exhibition rooms, thus creating a total work of art from light and space. The 52-metre-high chimney of the Lindenbrauerei brewery is itself a work of light art after dark.
Famous works by renowned artists
For example, in the permanent exhibition, Ólafur Eliasson creates a ‘reflecting corridor’, Mischa Kuball incorporates you as observers into his work ‘Space Speech Speed’ in the scenery and seemingly moves ‘planets’ chaotically through the room. Rooms made from light are James Turrell’s metier who with ‘Floater 99’ creates new ways of looking at light. It is one of two works by the internationally renowned light artist in the Centre for International Light Art. Also exhibited are works by Mario Merz, Joseph Kosuth, Jan van Munster, Keith Sonnier, Christian Boltanski, Rebecca Horn, François Morellet, Johannes Dinnebier and Christina Kubisch.
Vibrant special exhibitions
Adding to this, temporary special exhibitions which view light as an art form with various mottos: ‘Bright’, ‘Dark’ or ‘Light lines’ were some of the most visited temporary exhibitions in recent years. Over a total area of 2,400 square metres, you can expect a sensational world of light and illusion. Visits to the exhibition take place via a 90-minute tour which submerges you deep in the world of light art.
Light on the Route of Industrial Heritage
The backdrop of the former brewery in Unna is not least an anchor point of the Route of Industrial Heritage and a significant industrial monument. The Centre for International Light Art combines the new culture of the Ruhr Metropolis with the Ruhr region’s historic industrial heritage. The Centre for International Light Art in Unna is also part of the RuhrKunstMuseen.
