Gelsenkirchen – experience the fire!

The hearts of all Schalke fans beat faster when they think of Gelsenkirchen. The Veltins Arena, home of German Bundesliga team FC Schalke 04, is one of the attractions of the city of Emscher. Here, experience fiery football passion and fan culture, but not only that: festivals regularly take place ‘at Schalke’, such as Rock im Pott or major sports events, such as the popular Schalke Biathlon. Reason enough to take in Gelsenkirchen on your trip!

Slagheaps, mines and green views

The two ‘local mountains’, Rungenberg Spoiltip and Rheinelbe with their ladders offer a wonderful panoramic view over Gelsenkirchen and the neighbouring towns. After a strenuous climb, relax with a picnic high up and enjoy the view. Cool off with a detour to Nordsternpark around the former Nordstern Mine. The park, situated on the Rhine-Herne Canal, captivates with a large water play area. With the Nordstern tower and its artwork ‘Hercules of Gelsenkirchen’ by Markus Lüpertz, the park is an ace up the sleeve for all art and culture fans. Do you love culture? Then the MiR - the Musiktheater im Revier (Musical Theatre in the Region) - is the perfect place for you. The theatre which confidently calls itself ‘the most beautiful opera house in the region’, is not only dedicated to art, opera, singing, ballet, dance and concerts. Its architecture is also a piece of art. On an animal level, there is ZOOM Erlebniswelt- here you go on a trip around the world in one day through the animal worlds of Alaska, Asia and Africa. Boat trips are also on the agenda as is an igloo adventure, a canyon crossing and climbing – and of course you will experience the animals from different continents up close!
