Das Werksschwimmbad auf der Kokerei von oben

Werksschwimmbad and open-air cinema at Zollverein Mine

You don’t have to travel far to find summer, relaxation, exercise, nature, fresh air and a change of scene – you will find all of this at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site in Essen! Here you will also find the coolest outdoor swimming pool in NRW, the Werksschwimmbad. Directly in front of the former coke oven battery 9 of the Zollverein coke plant, you can sunbathe, relax, swim and dive in a unique work of art. The unique outdoor swimming pool is open from 14 July to 2 September 2018.

Work of art and swimming pool in one

The sapphire blue pool, which is a vibrant contrast to the rust-coloured industrial architecture, is the work of two Frankfurt artists. It was designed and built by Dirk Paschke and Daniel Milohnic in 2001. The swimming pool comprises two shipping containers welded together which have been anchored in a wooden frame which provides both walkways and areas for sunbathing. Through small portholes, which have been put into the hard metal underneath the water level, swimmers have a view of the visitors.

Cinema in front of an imposing backdrop

In immediate proximity to the Werksschwimmbad, the open-air cinema invites you to enjoy a film in unique surroundings. On multiple days, films are shown directly beneath the printing machine. On cinema days, the Werksschwimmbad is open until nightfall. There is catering on-site to provide sustenance.
