Ruhr Museum – Natural and Cultural History of the Ruhr Area

The Ruhr Museum Essen in the former coal washing plant of Zeche Zollverein has been one of the top sights in the Ruhr Area since its opening in the Capital of Culture year RUHR.2010. The Ruhr Museum is not a classic industrial museum, but rather a regional museum of the Ruhr Area and thus a memory and showcase of the region. The location at Zeche Zollverein, a world heritage site, already plays a special role. Germany's longest freestanding escalator leads you into the interior of this extraordinary industrial monument.

At the Ruhr Museum you will find everything you need to know about the development of Europe's largest conurbation in a compact and comprehensible way. The permanent exhibition shows you in a fascinating presentation the natural and cultural history of the Ruhr Area in the departments present, memory and history, linked with the socio-historical backgrounds. The museum tour begins with the myths, phenomena and structures of the present, followed by pre-industrial memory and ends after the presentation of the rapid industrialization processes in the presence of the Ruhr Metropolis.

The Ruhrpott: Geology, Archaeology, History and Photography

The extensive collections of the Regional Museum in the fields of geology, archaeology, history and photography are based on the collections of the former Ruhrland Museum of the city of Essen. The photo archive sees itself as the "photographic memory" of the region. Regular special exhibitions, also on topics that do not relate solely to the Ruhr Area, integrate the museum into the national culture of remembrance. The extensive exhibition and event programme is closely linked to the ZOLLVEREIN® heritage trail, the Route of Industrial Heritage and the Portal of Industrial Heritage.

The Ruhr Museum: A crowd pleaser

Since its opening in 2010, the Ruhr Museum has become a magnet for the public with more than two million visitors. The Ruhr Museum will continue to focus on its two main cultural tasks in the future: Education and tourism. The varied programme also includes workshops, guided tours, excursions, lectures, film evenings, audio guides and educational offers tailored to families and children.
