Essen – The shopping city: The legendary illuminated advertising welcomes you at the beginning of the shopping mile Kettwiger Straße. Directly behind the main railway station starts the renowned shopping street, which is still one of the top 20 in Germany. With good reason: You will find more than 700 shops in downtown Essen, large chains as well as exclusive boutiques. Designer fashion and current trends, accessories, shoes, sporting goods – City shopping in Essen promises a varied offer for all demands. And even after a shopping spree, Essen's city centre has a lot to offer: the GOP Varieté Theater with its spectacular stage shows, the Colosseum Theater Essen and the Lichtburg, Germany's largest cinema palace. A large culinary offer in restaurants, bars and cafés leaves nothing to be desired.
Essen city centre: Strolling with flair
Today, most of Essen's city centre is a pedestrian zone. You can easily reach the city centre by public transport, but there are also 25 multi-storey car parks with around 12,000 parking spaces available. So you can stroll undisturbed by any traffic and browse and shop in the shops. With the shopping centre "Limbecker Platz" on the northern edge of the city, the city also has the largest inner-city shopping centre with more than 200 shops on 70,000 square metres of space. The "Rathaus Galerie Essen" is a tranquil place. The small shopping centre with direct bus and underground connections offers around 50 shops and a fine selection of restaurants and cafés. The numerous events that take place all year round in the city of Essen also have a special flair: the Christmas market during the Advent season, tobogganing fun and ice rink during the winter season or the music festival "Essen.Original". At the beginning of September, the event transforms the entire city centre into a large stage. The Essen Light Weeks with the "Essen Light Festival" are known nationwide and show annually changing lighting motifs throughout the centre of Essen.
