Pure indulgence in the Ruhr Valley

The Ruhr Valley is particularly well-known for impressive industrial culture and extraordinary events. With eight Michelin-starred restaurants and a diverse, internationally-influenced cuisine, the Ruhr and Emscher regions are also culinary hotspots for connoisseurs. Throughout the year, a wide range of gourmet miles and street food festivals await where delectation meets striking backdrops.

Experience culinary diversity

The region owes its unique international restaurant scene to the unique mix of people from the most diverse cultures across the globe. The classics include Italian, Turkish, Greek and Asian specialities, but lovers of the “old Ruhr Valley cuisine” with sumptuous meat dishes and hearty stews also get value for money, just like fans of the infamous “currywurst” - best served with Pommes rot-weiß (chips with ketchup and mayonnaise). Whatever meal you opt for, a typical (holi)day in the Ruhr Valley should always end with a nice, cold beer in one of the rustic breweries. Fancy going into “Extra Time” afterwards? Then go for a cocktail at Duisburg inland harbour, at Bermuda3Eck (Bermuda Triangle) in Bochum or chill out at the city harbour on the Rhine-Herne canal. Then your visit to the Ruhr Valley will be a proper gourmet tour.

Open-air restaurants in summer

Numerous city centres in the Ruhr Valley transform into culinary miles - gastronomical “open-air restaurants” - in the summer months. You can let yourself be spoilt by the cities’ top chefs nearly every weekend in the summer. Whether "Essen... verwöhnt” (Indulge Essen)), "Gourmedo", "Rü Genuss Pur” (Rü Pure Indulgence” or "Bochum Kulinarisch” (Culinary Bochum), each gourmet mile combines high quality cuisine, hospitality and local specialities. Furthermore, certain specially themed events such as the Matjesfest in Duisburg (a market with fish stalls) or the Panhasfest in Hattingen (Scrapple festival) highlight unusual festival dishes. Joining the party are the increasingly popular street food festivals that often take place on former industrial sites.
