Football tradition in Herne

Herne has a rich football history dating back to the 1920s. One of the best-known clubs in the city is SC Westfalia Herne, which was founded in 1920 and was one of the best teams in West German football in the 1950s. Westfalia Herne also played in what was then the second-highest German league, the Regionalliga West.

Another important club in Herne's football history is SV Sodingen, which was founded in 1912. The club also played at times in the Regionalliga West and was able to celebrate some successes in the 1950s.

A highlight for Herne football was the DFB Cup game between Westfalia Herne and FC Bayern Munich in 1978. Although Westfalia Herne lost the game 0-4, it was a significant event for the club and the city. Today there are several football clubs in Herne that play in the various leagues of the football association.

Due to its geographical location in the middle of the Ruhr area, it is not far from Herne to the big first division teams in the surrounding cities, so fans of all colors romp here, united in the cause. The various football bars in Herne are particularly suitable for watching football together, and if you want to spontaneously experience a kick in a cult stadium, you will find a seat in the stands in the Schloss Strünkede stadium!
