Zollverein circular route with the RUHR.TOPCARD

The tour focusses on the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site in Essen, and with the RUHR.TOPCARD, it is a free day out by bike. Highlights are a tour along the Zollverein Monument Trail, and a visit to the Ruhr Museum. Take a relaxing bike ride on the radrevier.ruhr cycling routes network and enjoy a circular route through Gelsenkirchen. If you are arriving by car, as opposed to by bike, the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a sufficient amount of parking spaces. The Essen-Zollverein tram station is in the direct vicinity, and trams stop right in front of Zollverein Colliery. There is also a RevierRad hire station on the premises.

Phänomania and Monuments trail

RUHR.TOPCARD holders can enjoy a free tour of the Monuments trail, and free entry to the Ruhr Museum. Naturally, a cycling tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site is also worth it. Finally, the tour continues towards Bochum, along a fully redeveloped railway line, and to the Phänomania Erfahrungsfeld science museum. This former colliery originally belonged to Zollverein, but it is now home to a fantastic interactive exhibition.

Enjoy the view

The return route leads to the Rheinelbe mine dump with its Jacob’s ladder, which allows a beautiful view of the central Ruhr region. Passing the Gelsenkirchen Science Park, the route leads through Gelsenkirchen’s beautiful municipal park. Cyclists can easily cycle back to Zollverein via the Nordsternweg Route.
