Teutoburgia mining settlement, Herne

Teutoburgia colliery settlement

Located in the heart of the Ruhr region, in the heart of Herne, lies the Teutoburgia mining settlement, one of the region's most beautiful mining settlements. This historic workers' settlement is more than just a relic of the past. It embodies the miners' designed living environment and, with its garden city architecture, offers an impressive cultural heritage.

The innovative architect Otto Bernd created a fascinating variety of facades and roof shapes, resulting in 21 different house types that nevertheless create a harmonious overall appearance. Each house, originally designed as a two- or four-family home with its own vegetable and fruit garden, testifies to the art of living around 1909.

The Teutoburgia Mine Estate is not only residential space, but also a historical monument included in the International Building Exhibition. Following its renovation in the late 1980s, it shines in new splendor and attracts visitors with its unique diversity. Among the special highlights is the preserved headframe of the Teutoburgia I/II mine in the north of the estate, surrounded by an "art forest" with its sculptural objects, forming an impressive open-air museum.

The former machine hall, now home to the studio and concert hall of sound artist Christof Schläger, stands imposingly and offers a dynamic cultural program. The Teutoburgia mining settlement is more than a place of remembrance—it is a living example of how yesterday, today, and tomorrow can be lost in a stroll through its streets.
