West Park Bochum

Ups and Downs in Bochum's Westpark:

The Westpark, close to the city (just one kilometer from the city center), offers a lot of elevation changes - scenically, but also emotionally.

Let’s start with the facts:
The former site of Friedrich Krupp AG is now an extraordinary mix of industrial monument and event space. The partially preserved rail lines and of course the old industrial buildings are reminders of the miners' days. But the most striking thing is probably the different height levels. In the past, these were there to improve production processes. Today, they are a nice special for all parkour fans. But even less cocky park visitors can adventure here over stairs, ladders and bridges.

Now to the perceived height differences:
While on some days you can visit the Westpark in peace and quiet to recover from the city troubles, many events take place in the heart of the park and mainly in the Jahrhunderthalle. The Jahrhunderthalle was intended as an event venue after its completion in 1902, but was then used industrially for a while and has been back in the cultural scene since 2003.
Today, events that are well-known beyond the city limits take place here, such as the Ruhrtriennale or the historical fair. In winter, the Jahrhunderthalle becomes an ice cream parlor for two months and in summer, the Westpark is transformed into the festival grounds of the electronic Paluma Festival.
