Since its founding in 1982, the museum has made its mark worldwide by not hiding works of art behind thick walls, but by making them accessible to the public. The iconic glass architecture in the city center of Marl reflected the approach of making works of art, from masters such as Auguste Rodin and Alberto Giacometti to contemporary talents such as James Turrell and Isa Melsheimer, visible and accessible to all.
Whether in the urban area around the town hall or at the idyllic city lake - the more than 100 sculptures in public space invite you to explore in a unique way. This artistic openness continued with the installation "BLACKOUT" by the artist Mischa Kuball, which marked the end of the traditional location in the town hall. Until the new museum rooms are completed, young, contemporary art will be presented in the interim quarters in Marl-Hüls.
Under the large window front of the new quarter, the museum continues to magically attract visitors with fresh installations and media art works. More than just an exhibition - the museum is an experience space, especially through the awarding of the Marl Media Art Prize, which is awarded every two years and celebrates contemporary media art.
