From 11 to 8/7 BC, the largest Roman military camp north of the Alps was located in Bergkamen-Oberaden. The camp was founded under the general Nero Claudius Drusus, a stepson of Emperor Augustus. On an area of 56 hectares, it housed two legions with approximately 12.000 men. A 2,7 km long wall made of wood and earth protected the fortified complex. With the reconstruction of a section of the wood and earth wall and an archaeological trail leading to the most important sites of the Roman camp, the Roman Park offers an excellent insight into the significant Roman history of the town of Bergkamen and the region.
