Glass Elephant Maxipark

Maximilian Park Hamm

Maximilianpark Hamm - A discovery paradise for elephants and butterflies

In the Maximilianpark Hamm there is a glowing elephant in the forest - actually! The famous glass elephant, which is known far beyond the city limits of Hamm, not only attracts architecture and art lovers, but also offers a colorfully designed amusement park that captivates families. Between curved flowerbeds, adventurous play dunes, daring pirate ships and exotic butterflies, a day full of discoveries is guaranteed.

From Mine to Green Oasis

The 1984 State Garden Show transformed the former mine site into the Maximilian Park, a fusion of art, garden art and countless play opportunities. The artist Dr. Horst Rellecke transformed the former coal washing plant of the mine into the unique glass elephant. Today it houses an art garden with interactive objects and offers a spectacular viewing platform. Those interested can reach the platform via an elevator in the trunk, while a huge children's area awaits below. Here you will not only find play equipment, but also themed adventures such as climbing landscapes, jungles with swinging ropes, an old mine for treasure hunts or refreshing water playgrounds, allowing the imagination to run wild.

In the warmer months, the park's themed gardens shine in all their glory and invite you to stroll. Fragrant and rose gardens as well as the magnificent perennial beds by Piet Oudolf are real highlights. The butterfly house - the largest in NRW - presents tropical biodiversity up close with around 80 species on 450 square meters. All year round, events such as the autumn lights, children's theater plays, concerts, markets and exhibitions enrich the park. For those who are curious, there are guided tours of the themed gardens, the MaxiLab or the Green Classroom.
