LWL open-air museum in Hagen

LWL Open-Air Museum Hagen – Westphalian State Museum for Crafts and Technology

A visit to the LWL Open-Air Museum Hagen is like a journey back in time to the world of craftsmanship and technology of the 18th and 19th centuries. A unique blend of knowledge and experience unfolds here. Authentic half-timbered houses house traditional trades in the fields of iron, printing, paper, wood, and more. The opportunity to watch the craftsmen at work is almost magnetic: blacksmiths letting sparks fly, the scent wafting from old ovens, or the mysterious art of papermaking.

Experience living history

Around 60 workshops offer fascinating insights into almost forgotten techniques. Watch how ropes, cigars, and nails are made here as they once were. Fires blaze in the forge, while elsewhere, mill wheels are driven by the stream, setting heavy machinery in motion. A rich variety of special exhibitions and photo documentation delve deeper into historical trades and their significance.

Charming excursions into the past

Framed by the idyllic Mäckingerbach Valley, the museum's setting impresses with its quaint half-timbered houses and medieval charm. Guided tours are ideal for school classes and groups, bringing history to life. And who can resist a traditional, atmospheric Christmas market, which immerses the museum's backdrop in a magical pre-Christmas atmosphere? With its atmospheric lighting and lovingly decorated stalls, it promises a truly sensory experience.
