LVR Industrial Museum Peter-Behrens-Bau, Oberhausen

LVR Industrial Museum Peter-Behrens-Bau

When objects become true treasures, they find their home in the depot of the LVR Industrial Museum. Here, in the former main warehouse of the renowned Gutehoffnungshütte Group (GHH), artefacts are carefully stored on pallets, in shelves or drawers. The Bauhaus architect Peter Behrens, a pioneer of modern industrial architecture, gave the building its unmistakable style.

The design by Peter Behrens, which won an architectural competition in 1920, reflects the simplicity and functionality of the Bauhaus. Completed in 1925, the building is characterized by its cubic form and horizontal emphasis, embodied by a steel skeleton construction encased in robust brick. This architectural masterpiece concentrated efficiency and innovation in a single location, ideal for the industrial requirements of the time.

For decades, GHH stored essential spare parts and consumables in the building's long halls - from tiny screws to important writing paper. But in the 1990s, with the closure of the Oberhausen steel plant, the warehouse was given new life. The Rhineland Regional Association recognized the potential of this architectural masterpiece and acquired it in 1993.

Since 1998, the Peter Behrens Building has served as the central location of the LVR Industrial Museum, a listed building and rich in history. Its walls whisper the past years of the industrial revolution and invite visitors to discover and experience these stories. A symbol of industrial culture, ready to spark the curiosity of all adventurers who want to discover the hidden and the past.
