Art Collections Ruhr University Bochum: Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

In the heart of the Ruhr metropolis, you immerse yourself in a world in which visions have become reality. Just two years after the Ruhr University Bochum was founded, Albert Schulze-Vellinghausen gave it a collection of avant-garde works of art that make the pulse of post-war modernism tangible. Names such as Josef Albers, Cy Twombly and Al Held are exemplary of this. This initial collection was continuously expanded and today reflects the dynamic flow of time.

Thanks to generous support in the 1970s, such as that of the patron Paul Dierichs, works by greats such as Giacometti, Rickey and Serra were added. The link to the present that was created in the 1990s with photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher and artists such as Gerhard Richter and Bruce Nauman is particularly exciting. Works by contemporary creatives such as Katharina Grosse and James Turrell fit in seamlessly and always offer new perspectives.

The architecture of the university itself, a masterpiece of international modernism from the 1960s and 1970s, provides fertile ground on which art history comes to life. Here, visitors encounter a magical dialogue between antiquity and modernity, past and present. The rich selection of around 1.000 works of art is continually brought to life through thematic presentations and invites you to take an inspiring tour.
