Heap Pluto-Wilhelm - a multifaceted nature reserve in the middle of the Ruhr area, where industrial culture and nature form an incomparable symbiosis. This hidden gem in Herne was created from the mining of the former hard coal mine and today offers a paradise for explorers and nature lovers.
The Heap Pluto-Wilhelm fascinates with its elaborate reforestation and greening, which today makes it a popular retreat for numerous species of butterflies. Especially in the warmer months, the area is transformed into a colorful butterfly paradise. A visit is worthwhile not only because of the variety of flora and fauna, but also because of the picturesque location on the Erzbahntrasse adventure cycle path, one of the most beautiful connections between Bochum and Gelsenkirchen.
Since 2014, the slag heap has had a breathtaking, five-meter-high viewing platform that offers a fantastic panoramic view from a height of around 75 meters. After climbing 40 steps, the viewer is presented with a panoramic view that stretches from the Pluto mine to distant landmarks such as the Essen town hall and the Consol mine. A pure inspiration for photographers and nature lovers, especially when the sky is clear.
