The site extends over six hectares and is characterized by its diversity: a steep, barren southern slope and gentler, greener slopes in other areas, creating a more humid microclimate. A 200-meter-long walking path winds like a lifeline to the top of the heap, offering visitors several artistic delights along the way.
The impressive art installation "Über(n) Ort" by Kirsten Kaiser on the southern slope deserves special attention. It consists of 23 vertical tubes that join together to form a seemingly floating line – particularly spectacular at night, when its LED lighting enchants the Bochum cityscape.
But art lovers will find more than one place to enjoy their visit. The western slag heap reveals another installation: three steel columns symbolizing the imposing chimneys of the Lothringen mine—a tribute to Gerthe's past.
This slag heap is not only a remarkable vantage point and meeting place for urban adventurers, but also a symbol of the change and innovation that characterize the Ruhr area.
