Created as part of the striking slag heap landscape of the northern Ruhr area, the Hoheward slag heap rises majestically with a height of 152 metres. This impressive landmark is an important part of the Industrial heritage route and fascinates with its transformation into a diverse recreational and cultural landscape. As one of the largest slag heaps of its kind, it is a popular destination for excursions and adventurers.
Whether you are a hiker, jogger or mountain biker – the slag heap offers both a challenge and relaxation. The climb is rewarded with a breathtaking panorama: the view stretches from the Gasometer in Oberhausen over the Dortmund TV tower to the Düsseldorf Rhine Tower 50 km away – on a clear day, a visual journey through the Ruhr region.
A special attraction is the horizon observatory with its impressive steel arches, which are visible far beyond the silhouette of the slag heap. These form the local meridian on the platform and serve as a fascinating instrument for observing the sky. The horizontal sundial also features a large obelisk - a highlight for astronomy lovers. Since 2008, the impressive dragon bridge has provided a direct connection to the Hochlarmark district park and further to the triangle settlement. The bridge structure resembles the skeleton of a dragon and attracts fascinated glances with its impressive design.
At the foot of the slag heap is the Ewald mine with the Hoheward visitor center, which houses the "New Horizons" exhibition. Hiking and Segway tours of the slag heap can also be booked here to experience the landscape in depth.
Experience the fantastic and diverse view from the Hoheward slag heap – an adventure for all explorers in the heart of the Ruhr area.
