The Hohenhof - The Museum of the Hagen Impulse

The Hohenhof in Hagen is an architectural masterpiece, designed by the Belgian artist-architect Henry van de Velde as a home for the visionary Hagen Folkwang founder Karl Ernst Osthaus. This jewel of architectural history, built shortly after the turn of the century, is one of the most important European buildings and offers a rare example of a total work of art. The interior design resembles the composition of a picture: every detail harmonizes perfectly with one another without neglecting the functionality of the rooms.

The stylish architect's garden, originally designed as a decorative frame for the house based on van de Velde's geometric design, was adapted by Leberecht Migge in 1913. Today, the Hohenhof is part of the Osthaus Museum and has been an anchor point on the Industrial Heritage Route in the Ruhr area since 1999. The original designs in the interior impressively present Art Nouveau, while the former coach house offers an overview of van de Velde's furniture design from four decades, complemented by exhibits made of silver, porcelain and ceramics.

In 2015, the Hohenhof was the first house in the Ruhr area and Westphalia to be included in the renowned Iconic Houses. These extraordinary architect-designed houses of the 20th century are milestones of modern architecture and offer interested parties comprehensive insights into the history of construction. A visit to the Hohenhof not only opens up the world of an iconic building, but also a journey through the fascinating cultural history of the region. The combination of inspiring art and impressive design creates a unique experience that arouses curiosity and invites discovery.
