Vondern Castle, Oberhausen

Vondern Castle

Today's Vondern Castle (first documented in 1266) is a mighty and picturesque outer bailey from the early 16th century and one of the oldest preserved buildings in Oberhausen. Originally built by Wessel von Loe, a representative of an ancient Westphalian noble family, it impresses with a gate building flanked by two massive round towers with defensive loopholes and late Gothic decorative forms in cornices, windows and vaults.

The main building, whose west façade may be attributed to the medieval predecessor, dates back to the late 17th century. A 19th-century outbuilding complements the complex on the south side. This architectural diversity makes Vondern Castle a charming destination for history enthusiasts and explorers alike.

Today, the castle primarily serves as an impressive backdrop for events such as concerts, knightly spectacles, and medieval festivals. These events are a must for anyone seeking something extraordinary and wanting to experience living history firsthand. However, spaces such as the manor house and the coach house are also available for private events, making the entire grounds available for individual use.

Spontaneous visitors can request a guided tour to discover the castle's rich history and hidden corners. In addition to its historical heritage, the location offers numerous photo opportunities: from the ivy-covered towers to the impressive vaults. The castle invites you to explore it from new perspectives and let yourself be captivated by its atmosphere.
