The BernePark in Bottrop, located on the Emscher Island between the Gasometer Oberhausen and the Nordsternpark Gelsenkirchen, is a fascinating example of the transformation from industry to culture. It is located directly along the Emscher cycle path and offers both cultural encounters and tourist highlights. Originally a sewage treatment plant from the 1950s that was shut down in 1997, the park underwent an impressive transformation into a place of industrial culture thanks to the EMSCHERKUNST.2010 project.

In BernePark, internationally renowned artists have transformed the formerly hidden sewage treatment plant into a surprising park. Today, a walkable lake bears witness to historical elements, while another basin is a sunken garden with thousands of perennials and grasses that resembles a green amphitheater. The restaurant in the machine house, which impressively integrates parts of the original machines into the ambience, offers culinary delights with a unique flair. The "Park Hotel" is particularly fascinating - five sewer pipes that have been converted into suites offer an unforgettable view of the starry night sky of the Ruhr area through the porthole.

In the dye garden, visitors can discover plants from which natural dyes are obtained. Schools, daycare centers and clubs have the opportunity to gain practical experience in the "green classroom" with exciting experiments in botany, biology, chemistry and art.
