Berger monument on the Hohenstein

The Berger Memorial Tower, an impressive structure made of Ruhr sandstone, rises 20 meters high on the eastern slope of the Hohenstein and offers a fascinating view over the Ruhr. This monument commemorates Louis Berger, a visionary entrepreneur and politician of the early industrialization who transformed Witten into an industrial center.

A spiral staircase inside leads to the viewing platform, which not only offers a visual reward but also bridges the gap between past and present. The breathtaking panorama encompasses the picturesque Ruhr Valley, the historic Hohenstein hydroelectric power station, the impressive railway viaduct, and the Nachtigall colliery in the Muttental valley.

Surrounding parks invite you to a variety of recreational activities: whether hiking, cycling, or jogging – everyone will find their own little adventure here. The nearby petting zoo and the game reserve with wild boar and fallow deer are a real highlight, especially for families. The Berger Memorial Tower and its surroundings offer a true immersion in the authentic history of the Ruhr region, providing adventurous visitors with inspiration and lasting impressions.
