Alternative city tour – See Duisburg with different eyes (adult)

The alternative city tour of Duisburg takes its time and divides the tour into two tours:

We drive for three hours at 13. June through the northern part of Duisburg, including Homberg. On 19 September The route takes 3 hours through the southern part of Duisburg and into the Rheinhausen district.
Duisburg, the metropolis in the far west of the Ruhr region, has more than 500.000 inhabitants and lies on three rivers. It has 47 districts, 250 listed architectural monuments, and over 55.000 street trees. The tourist highlights are largely well-known. Some are visited, but they are not the focus of the tour.
The more interesting aspect seems to be the "behind the scenes": The tour leads to the outskirts, to the places where people work and (enjoy) living. This opens up entirely different perspectives on the city – insights rarely, if ever, gained elsewhere. These range, for example, from the over 800-year-old church in the Beeck district, to the view of the "Black Giants" at the Thyssen-Krupp steelworks in Schwelgern, and on to the historic workers' settlements in the south and north of the city. Completely different impressions are gained from the Bauhaus architecture in the Poets' Quarter, the old cooperative housing estates in Wanheimerort, or the abbey and the old botanical garden in Hamborn.

The alternative city tour offers new insights into the city center and surrounding areas of Duisburg – the city of Montan, as it was once known during its heavy industrial past. In today's age of consumerism, logistics, and information technology, however, this is now a purely historical term. It seems more important to take a closer look at the city's current state and to critically examine its recent developments.
Tour guide Reiner Leuchter from the Duisburg Foundation for Environment, Health and Social Affairs is a retired landscape architect and urban planner. He once said during the tour: "Let's take a look at the city of the past and the present and try to imagine ourselves in the city of the future. We could all help shape its identity – out of a sense of responsibility and/or out of love for this city."
