ESSEN.ORIGINAL - experience pure music pleasure at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site

Do you fancy really letting it all hang out with your friends in the open air, but can't really agree what type of music to listen to? Then the free Essen Original festival is a great place to start: This major city open-air festival has taken place in late summer in Essen every year since 1996. This year it takes place at the same time as NRW-Tag (North-Rhine Westphalia Day) at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Essen Original - music for (almost) every taste

Live music is played over three days on a total of six open-air stages. National and internationally known musicians and bands as well as artists from the area play a mixture of rock ‘n’ roll, rock, metal, dark music, pop, hip-hop, reggae, ska, jazz, schlager, and classical at Essen Original.

The number and location of the stages vary from year to year. However, the central stage remains constant as it is always on Kennedyplatz.
Some as yet unknown bands and artists may demonstrate their skills on the open stage at Flachsmarkt after prior application and subsequent agreement. Groups of children can have fun on the stage at Hirschlandplatz. The programme at Essen Original is rounded off with musicals and comedy shows.
A festival market also takes place at the Marktkirche and on Flachsmarkt, selling typical articles such as T-shirts, sunglasses, jewellery, and airbrush tattoos.

Food and refreshments are also provided

What would an open-air festival in the Ruhr region be without beer and currywurst? No need to worry about hunger or thirst at Essen Original: Plenty of stalls offering food and drink can be found in the pedestrian area.

Almost six figures visiting Essen Original

Due to the variety of music offered and the supporting programme, Essen Original is unique in the Ruhr Metropolis and attracts hordes of visitors. On occasion the three-day music festival in Essen city centre attracted up to 250,000 people.
So, be there next time!
