The dark period of the year will be accompanied with thousands of lights in Essen city centre. The Essen Light Festival has been one of the most attractive traditions in the city since 1950. It has a new motto every year, illuminated on many themed pictures and display screens. From the Grugapark via fairy tales from 1001 Nights to Disney’s colourful comic figures, the motifs are all figures from the past.
Essen Light Festival hosts the world
The Essen Light Festival has, over the last few years, invited a guest EU country to the city: Denmark and Finland, Hungary and the Netherlands, France and Spain - those and many other European countries were represented there. The Light Festival has kicked off with a spectacular fireworks display since 2010. The Essen Light Festival and the international Christmas market are excellent reasons to visit Essen during autumn and winter. Also: The electricity for this spectacle is 100% generated from renewable energy sources.
