This year Manifesta is coming to the Ruhr area and will show from June 21 to October 4, 2026 Contemporary art in places that are rarely in the spotlight. A central theme of the Biennale is the use of vacant post-war churches, which in several cities of the Ruhr region are being transformed into spaces for artistic and social projects.
The Biennale works closely with local initiatives, collectives, and artists. An open call for projects sought ideas on how these church spaces could be reinterpreted and used as non-religious spaces for exchange, participation, and creative work. A jury of regional and international experts selected projects that highlight the Ruhr region as an urban cultural space.
For visitors from the region and beyond, Manifesta 16 Ruhr offers a fresh perspective on architecture, urban society, and artistic practice. Installations, performances, and participatory formats are deliberately created outside of traditional exhibition settings – opening up new perspectives on the Ruhr region and its urban spaces.
