When Brian Jones, guitarist and founding member of the Rolling Stones, drowned in his swimming pool on July 3, 1969, he paid with his life the first membership fee for a club that would soon expand. Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and, exactly two years later on June 3, 1971, Jim Morrison followed – all of them turning 27. Thus, the myth was born. Since then, the door to the so-called Club 27 has been regularly knocked on, with Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse among those seeking entry. A VIP club of the highest order.

But the notorious members have more in common than just their age:

Things have never been so swell, I have never failed to fail.

Many of them were among the most influential and talented musicians of their time and made history even before their deaths. They lived outside and beyond themselves, shaping the cultural heritage not only of the Western world, and were the focal point of numerous desires. They were perforated and excessive, feeling every fiber of this world and trying to function – if necessary, often with heroin. Their lives became political statements, and with their defiance of consensus, they shaped the counterculture movements and thus entire generations. They were incredibly free.

I'm all for you, body and soul.

Thus, in the short time that all these free radicals had left before joining Club 27, a wildly spectacular, thunderously loud, deeply tragic and, damn it, extremely unique concentration of life was squeezed into which there was probably more going on than any of us mere mortals can imagine in an entire lifetime.

Riders on the storm, Into this house, we're born, Into this world, we're thrown.

Club 27 has invited everyone to its general assembly at the Schauspielhaus Bochum. It's guaranteed to be an evening where no explosive emotion or great song will be left out.

It's better to burn out than to fade away.
