For most people, visiting a Christmas market with craft stalls, mulled wine, and roasted almonds is simply part of the Advent season. A true crowd-pleaser is the Christmas market in Bochum's city center, which will take place for the 55th time in 2026 from Thursday, November 19th, to Wednesday, December 23rd (closed: Remembrance Sunday, November 22nd).
It offers not only up to 200 lovingly decorated market stalls spread across 33,000 square meters, a medieval market, a curling rink, enormous light sculptures, and a fairytale forest, but also a Santa Claus who "takes to the skies." Even the name behind the "Flying Santa" hints at something grand. After all, Falko Traber comes from a famous family of high-wire artists. At a height of 33 meters, he soars on his reindeer-drawn sleigh along a 125-meter-long stretch above Dr.-Ruer-Platz. Santa Claus tells a Christmas story above the heads of the visitors.
Santa Claus is especially delighted when children recite a poem or sing a song with him. It pays to be brave – a surprise awaits the little participants.
