For most people, visiting a Christmas market with craft stalls, mulled wine, and roasted almonds is simply part of the Advent season. A true crowd-pleaser is the Christmas market in Bochum's city center, running from Thursday, November 19th, to Wednesday, December 23rd (closed: Remembrance Sunday, November 22nd). This year marks its 55th anniversary. Spanning 33,000 square meters, it offers not only up to 200 lovingly decorated market stalls, a medieval market, a curling rink, enormous light sculptures, and a fairytale forest, but also a Santa Claus who "takes to the skies." The very name behind the "Flying Santa" hints at something extraordinary. After all, Falko Traber comes from a famous family of high-wire artists. He soars 33 meters above the ground on his reindeer-drawn sleigh over Dr.-Ruer-Platz. The 125-meter-long course is a testament to this. Santa Claus tells a Christmas story above the heads of the visitors. Afterwards, Santa is especially delighted by children who recite a poem or sing a song with him. It pays to be brave – a surprise awaits the little participants.
