Xanten
The town of Xanten in the North of the Metropolis Ruhr lies in the district of Wesel and is one of the highlights of a cultural history trip to the Ruhr Area. The Xanten archaeological park shows life in the Roman town "Colonia Ulpia Traiana" and is an ideal excursion destination in the Ruhr Area that does not just appeal to families.
Xanten itself is a small dreamy town on the Lower Rhine. Walkers and cyclists love tours in the water meadow landscape of the River Rhine and around the Xanten North and South Lakes. The 110 hectare lakes area is excellently suited for water sports such as water skiing.
The LVR Archaeological Park Xanten (APX) brings the ancient world to life, as 2000 years earlier the Romans set sail on the Lower Rhine and founded the town Colonia Ulpia Traiana. In the extensive green area of the open air museum, reconstructions tell of how the harbour temple and the amphitheatre, the town walls, residential houses and public baths made Roman daily life look like in Germania.
Another highlight is the LVR Römer Museum (LVR Roman Museum). Its exhibition depicts the history of Xanten from the times of Caeser to Franconia.
