LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Nachtigall
Nachtigall colliery in Witten is regarded as the birthplace of Ruhr mining and is therefore one of the highlights in the Ruhr area. As a major attraction on the Route of Industrial Heritage Nachtigall colliery and the surrounding Mutten Valley is a popular excursion destination on the Ruhr river.
The pioneering era of mining is kept alive in Mutten valley. Equipped with helmets, visitors can forge ahead in the Nachtigall gallery to a genuine coal seam. Former miners recount the harsh conditions under which fellow miners once dug up "black gold" - a particular adventure for families in the Ruhr area.
On board of a sailing vessel the museum presents the history of coal shipping on the Ruhr river. The later use of the colliery, which was decommissioned in 1892, as a brickyard can be seen in the ring kiln. An excursion to Nachtigall colliery is well combined with a trip on the Ruhr Valley Railway (Ruhrtalbahn) from Hagen or the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum and a short trip by the Mutten Valley Railway (Muttentalbahn) – a former mine railway.
