20 Ruhr Kunst Museen

An excellent density of museums, and one of the largest collections of modern and contemporary art world-wide: the Ruhr Area has it all! Twenty art museums in fifteen cities of the Ruhr Metropolis merged under one name on the occasion of the Capital of Culture RUHR.2010: RuhrKunstMuseen (Ruhr Art Museums).

Each of these institutions is a historically grown location with its own individual profile. Together they tell the varied history of art, from the 19th century, through the classical modern art, all the way up to the present. The locations of this impressive collection are in close proximity to each other in the Ruhr Area: the Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Expressionism; an outstanding overall view of painting post-1945.

Bacon, Beckmann, Gauguin, van Gogh, Emil Schumacher or Gerhard Richter. Sculptures and new media from Lehmbruck to Nam June Paik. Art in all cardinal directions: from Marl to Hagen, from Duisburg to Unna. The region is shaped by the museums. And the museums are shaped by the region.

In the Ruhr Area, the past and the process of change, industrial history and cultural present, everyday life and art are so densely interwoven as in no other cultural landscape.
