The town of Herten lies in the North of the Ruhr Area and is one of the insiders' tips in the area with one of the most beautiful slag heaps. The town is of special interest as an excursion destination for industrial heritage lovers. At the Hoheward slag heap, situated in the landscape park of the same name, you are virtually climbing up to the roof of the Ruhr Area.

Europe's largest slag heap, Hoheward, offers impressive views of the cultural region of the Ruhr Area. The sky observatory and the obelisk on the slag heap plateau provide a unique photo setting and are worth the arduous ascent, which you can overcome using the "stairway to heaven" with 250 steps.

At the base of the slag heap lies the future-orientated site Ewald, a former colliery premises, which is interesting not only to business travellers involved in environmentally friendly energy. Visitors experience industrial heritage at first hand.

The range of tourist attractions is extended further by the RevuePalast Ruhr, which provides a terrific evening programme for a trip through the Ruhr Area with a colourful travesty cabaret show and dazzling costumes.

Westerholt palace now houses a hotel and restaurant and together with the historic town centre in the Alte Dorf Westerholt (Westerholt's old village), is another destination for a short break. Today there area about 400 residents living in 58 listed half-timbered houses.
