The Ruhr: The 2010 European Capital of Culture!
For one year, the 53 cities of the Ruhr Metropolis form the centre of arts and culture in Europe. The present an extraordinary, more or less unknow cultural metropolis and their motto "Culture through Change, Change through Culture".
1000 reasons for a weekend away, an exciting city trip- or better even several trips. Throughout the year first class exhibtions in brand new and reknowned museums are waiting for you, unique events like the long table on the "autobahn", and one city as "local hero" every week.

The official opening of the Capital of Culture takes place on January 9 and 10, 2010 at UNESCO world heritage site Zollverein in Essen. Once a highly productive mine and coke plant, today symbol for the Change of the region from industrial to cultural metropolis.
"We are the fire" is the headline for the inauguration party, the new Ruhr Musuem will be opened and there will be two days of partying for everybody- celebrating "We are the Ruhr".
Let's celebrate 10 years of ExtraSchicht- the anniversary of the big Night of Industrial Culture takes place on June 19, 2010, nicknamed the Summer Fest of the Capital Culture, people from all over Europe are invitied to join in to experience the unforgettable. From 6 pm to 2 am, at 40 spots such as former steal plants, factory halls and pits that become stages for theater, music, dance, lectures and illuminations. The Ruhr is celebrating and beaming- a unique opportunity to experience a very special region.
