Oberhausen

Oberhausen:
Industrial heritage and entertainment
Shaped in the past by magnificent industrial tradition, Oberhausen has meanwhile developed into a successful holiday and leisure destination. The “New Centre” with Europe’s largest shopping and leisure centre CentrO, the Gasometer and further attractions allure more than 23 million visitors from Germany and abroad every year.

The CentrO that was opened in 1996 includes a shopping centre with 70,000 square metres and 200 shops, the CentrO.PARK as well as a Multiplex cinema. The modern event location König-Pilsener-ARENA with more than 12,000 seats and the Metronom Theater are also directly connected to the CentrO: this is where the musical ”Dance of the Vampires“ (Polanski´s Fearless Vampire Killers) celebrated its premiere in the Ruhrgebiet area in November last year. In addition, a small yacht harbour, the Marina Oberhausen, and Germany’s largest SEA LIFE aquarium are located in the immediate neighbourhood of the CentrO: here you can see more than 20,000 sea dwellers – from graceful sea horses to rays and sharks. From the depths of the seas to lofty heights? That is no problem in Oberhausen. Courageous people can swing from tree to tree up to 16 metres above the ground at the ropes course Tree2Tree-Hochseilklettergarten (highwire climbing garden) – of course secured by ropes and guided by experts. But you can go even higher than that – the Gasometer with its height of 117 metres is the observation tower of the Ruhrgebiet area: in clear weather, you will have a terrific view from the roof of the former industrial giant over more than 30 kilometres of Europe’s Capital of Culture 2010 – the Ruhrgebiet area. Today the interior space of the steel colossus is primarily used as an exceptional exhibition hall. The exhibition “Out of this World - Wonders of the Solar System“ with fascinating prospects from outer space will be opened in April 2009. The same applies to a new attraction in Oberhausen’s “New Centre“ for a glance into the past: a great model railway world was opened in August 2008 with a trueto- scale scenery of parts of the Ruhrgebiet area as it used to be between 1965 and 1970. And as far as “nightlife“ in Oberhausen is concerned: the CentrO Promenade in the New Centre with a length of 400 metres has become the most popular meeting point for nighthawks. More than 20 international restaurants, clubs und discotheques offer an enormous variety. Idyllically located at the water, the alley-like promenade with more than 4000 outdoor seats extends an invitation to stroll and relax on a pleasant summer evening. But a visit is always worthwhile to the Ludwig Galerie Schloss Oberhausen with its modern contemporary exhibitions or to the “cabaret temple” Ebertbad with its outstanding cabaret programme. Of course, Oberhausen is proud of its International Short Film Festival, which has taken place every year since 1954. Just as attractive; the idyllic and original side of Oberhausen becomes evident in Schloss Oberhausen (Oberhausen castle) and in particular in the “Old Centre“ around Hauptbahnhof (central station) and Friedensplatz (Peace Square). And whoever intends to immerge into the history of the city will viste the Rheinische Industriemuseum (Rhenish Industrial Museum) with its outstanding exhibition about the history of iron and steel at the rivers Rhine and Ruhr or the residential estate Eisenheim, the oldest working-class estate in the Ruhrgebiet area. The “cradle of the Ruhr industry“ will soon be accessible for visitors after its 250th anniversary: at present archaelogics are conducting excavations of the first ironworks in the Ruhrgebiet area on the present site of the St. Antony Hütte (St. Antony ironworks), which was already established in 1758. A highlight for the Capital of Culture 2010!
