The idea of linking a festival of the arts to the industrial heritage of the Ruhr Area really captured the spirit of the times: Gerard Mortier, as the co-founder and first artistic director, succeeded on the first attempt at establishing the Ruhrtriennale 2002 - 2004 as one of the outstanding European festivals, with a top-quality programme.


The artistic directorship of Willy Decker the Ruhrtriennale 2009 - 2011 is exploring the areas of conflict between art and creativity and the original elements of the religious. In 2009, focus is on the Jewish culture, in 2010 on Islamic culture and finally in 2011 on Buddhist culture. The settings for the Ruhrtriennale are the unique industrial monuments of the Ruhr Area – including the Zollverein colliery in Essen, the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, the Zweckel machine hall in Gladbeck or the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum which are being transformed into spectacular performance spaces for music, theatre, literature and dance.
