One of the most fascinating museums in the Ruhr area, yet an insiders' tip, is the St. Antony ironworks in Oberhausen. The museum provides information on the start of the iron and steel industry in the Metropolis Ruhr in an entirely novel way with an "industrial-archaeological park".

An idyllically situated half-timbered building by the Elpenbach pond in Oberhausen – you would not suspect heavy industry in this area and yet you stand in front of the first ironworks in the Ruhr area, the St. Antony ironworks.

The LVR Industrial Archaeological Park opened here in October 2010, which is one of a kind in Germany. Here, visitors can marvel at the exposed remains of the old plant in a 1,000 square metre excavation. On more than 225 sqm of exhibition space, in the former manager's residence, the Rhenish Industrial museum presents the fascinating history of the St. Antony ironworks in which the iron and steel industry took its beginnings in 1758.

Its role as the birthplace of Ruhr industry, the economic crime that occurred there and the global corporation which eventually developed from this, is shown in the impressively designed permanent exhibition.
