An insiders' tip amongst the museums in the Ruhr Area is the Camera Obscura at the Museum on the Prehistory of Film in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Take a tour through one of the most beautiful water towers in the Ruhr metropolis, and discover historical baubles to touch and marvel at.

On the occasion of the Mülheim State Garden Show 1992, the largest accessible camera obscura in the world was installed in the Broich Water Tower in Mülheim an der Ruhr by Zeiss of Jena.

Particularly when the weather is sunny, visitors to the museum in Mülheim can look out over a very special view of the surrounding area, observing houses, aeroplanes and cars from a unique perspective. Over three floors of the former water tower, the museum tells the history of still and moving pictures before the invention of the film camera.

The museum surprises visitors with insights into the fascinating world of visual perception, optical illusion, and the physics behind moving images.
